travel 2011 - edinburgh and london

I have a contingent of Scottish pals, all of whom I've known for many years. I met them whilst they were living and working in Sydney and we've managed to stay in touch through the years. Whenever I travel to the UK I always make a trip to Scotland. Sometimes I stay Glasgow but on this occasion, I'll be staying in Edinburgh.



This photo was taken on film during my last visit to Edinburgh in 2005. I was there to attend a conference and I didn't enter a single store during my visit. I'm only going to be in Edinburgh for a weekend in late June but I'm hoping to hit a few stores whilst I'm there. Any suggestions for great places to visit or things to see and do in Edinburgh from my readers would be greatly appreciated.



Now what about London? I first visited a foggy London when I was 15 and I've given up counting the number of times I've visited since then. I've already bookmarked a few new places I'd love to check out and some old favourites as well. I think I might take a day trip to Brighton as well, which I'm ashamed to say I've yet to visit.

It's been another hot day in Sydney. I was out in the western suburbs for work and really appreciated the sea breeze that was blowing when I returned home this afternoon. I went to Bondi Junction and had a power shop. In one short hour I bought 3 Christmas gifts, some Christmas cards and stamps and have shortlisted a few more items to buy on Monday my day off.

On Monday I have a date with Kurt, the travel agent, to start planniing my trip for 2010. Dates and locations are hazy but I think you can safely say that London, Glasgow and Paris will definitely be on my itinerary plus some places in Scandinavia, probably Oslo and who knows where else. I'm certainly open to suggestions. As 2009 passed by without a holiday I've already told work they won't be seeing me in June or July. I normally book my trips about 3 weeks before I fly out so I'm not used to such long range planning.

For today I'm leaving you with the last few film images from my little plastic camera. As I was trying to finish off the roll of film, I literally walked out my front door and snapped the last 6 frames around my neighbourhood - the local church, Cooper Park and the block of flats slated for demolition.

It's been a really busy week so I'm glad the weekend has finally arrived. I have a 3-day break about which I'm really excited. See you all next week,

Friday Favourites- Blue Mountains on film

A few weeks ago I wrote about my new little plastic camera. I collected the film on Wednesday and I thought you'd like to see the end results.

A few frames didn't turn out but overall I thought the results were pretty impressive. The images have a really dreamy soft look with a heavy vignette and a small area in sharp focus. I have a few more images to show you later but I know I'll certainly be playing with my little toy camera again.

I found a few more images of Paris to tempt you with. 



I stayed in a sweet hotel in the Marais, the Hotel Vieux Marais on Rue du Platre quite close to the Pompidou Centre and the Rue des Archives. I walked every where or took the metro.



All the photos were taken around the Marais district or Les Halles, which is only 1 metro stop away.

Paris in black and white

Paris is a beautiful city and I think it looks best in black and white.

I thought I'd take more photos of Paris in black and white but it rained the first day or two and was so dreary I didn't want to waste my film.

The sun came out on the third day so I raced around trying to retrace my steps, so I could get some photos of Paris in sunshine.

I went a bit market mad so the next blog will feature Borough Markets in London, some more images from the St Antoni Markets in Barcelona and the Mercado do Bolhau in Porto.



I'll leave you with some of my favourite Paris scenes.

I've been wanting to do this for ages - compare film images with digital images. Call me a luddite, but I still prefer film as it's a more complete product. There's way too much fiddling around with digital images for my like.

I've chosen 3 images and I've posted the digital version and the film version of the same image. I've done no adjustments to the files - these are straight from the camera or the scanner. The film images always come back a bit red so I usually adjust a little for that, whilst with the digital images I normally change the levels, the exposure, the saturation then sharpen to taste.
